5th Farnham Millennium Camp > June 2000
About 10 of our Ventures helped on the 5th Farnham (Bourne) Scout Group Millennium Camp on the 9th to 11th June 2000. Pictures can be seen in the photo gallery. Below is a copy of the press release which was sent to The Farnham Herald on the 12th June.
Nearly one hundred Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts from the 5th Farnham Scout Group together with a further one hundred family, friends and Leaders attended the 5th Farnham Scout Group "Millennium Camp" at the Farnham Scout District campsite, Garners Field, Tilford over the weekend June 9th to 11th.
In what turned out to be a glorious weekend both young and old alike participated in two days of fun including climbing, caving, canoeing, shooting, archery, aerial runway, bungee run, assault course, craft activities and many more. An evening disco and campfire helped use up any energy still remaining at the end of each day! The weekend culminated in an "It's a knock out" competition that teamed up all ages in a series of hilarious but hard fought challenges reminiscent of the famous game show.
For those involved "behind the scenes" special tribute was paid to those who had organised the event and those who had catered at times for up to two hundred people. Special thanks were reserved for the soldiers of Q Company, SEME (School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering) Regiment, Bordon who had set up much of the site prior to the weekend and helped give the weekend much "street cred." by staying on to run the assault course and generally join in. Grateful thanks were expressed to the Farnell Business Development Team who generously loaned communications equipment to help the event run so smoothly, and Summit Ventures for there much valued assistance.
During the weekend the opportunity was taken to invest one Venture Scout half way up the climbing wall and, in a poignant moment, 5th Farnham Group Scout Leader Ken Powell was presented by County Scouting official Phil Curry, with the Silver Acorn award recognising Ken's 50 years of valued service to the Scouting movement.
A great success all round suitably summed up by one young Cub Scout who, keen to see the weekend repeated, was heard to ask "when's the next Millennium camp?"
